Summer of holidays and cricket

Hi everyone!

Hope all are doing well!

I've been working hard as per usual. Am saving my money to go on a short trip in the end of July (working as a school teacher is good for holidays). I have a few friends around then country and its time I payed them a visit.

I've recently decided to work toward taking a Japanese language test so I've been studying hard (if you come to the parties feel free to speak Japanese to me, I need the practice!).

Other then those things I'm just enjoying the warm weather. It's the far more enjoyable to be able to sit on the grass than the snow!

Oh and I finally have found a game of cricket to lay this weekend!! It's gonna be embarrassing as I haven't played in about 10 years but I'm excited to see how my skills have held up (even though I was terrible to start with).

See you soon!!

Ready for the next step!

Hello everyone!

I hope it is going as fine for you as it is going for me.
I'm still living the dream here in Japan, My japanese skills are increasing slowly but surely and I still enjoy a lot learning this wonderful language, no matter how hard it is.
I also spent a great summer, (for those who already know me they must know all about it so I will make it short) I could travel a lot in Hokkaido this summer, I found out many outstandingly beautiful places, and could eat a lot of good food. and I'm not even talking about the good sake. Also two of my best friends from France came to visit me…in one word: "perfect" summer vacations.

Well, after this very funny summer and as sure as the autumn will succeed to the summer (even if right now that last one does not seem to be in the rush to clear the place) I'm planning to start a new way of life. Less fun, more studies.
Until now I could count on what I already knew in Japanese to take it easy but from now on everything I'm about to learn is brand new, so I'll have to be much more serious. I'm also planning to pass the JLPT N2 next December, which is a test in Japanese way above my current level. It will ask me a lot of personal work just to get 20% of chance of success. but I've got the right motivation, I want to improve my Japanese just as you want to improve your English.

In order to fulfill that dream I filled the application today and will probably send it tomorrow or next week. I will probably buy next month at least four different books (grammar kanjis etc..) and I'm also reorganizing my life to be more adequate to my purpose. Which means less going out, of course more studying, but more sport as well. If your body feels right, your mind does too! But that is an other story.

Thank you for reading me, I'm looking forward to meet you, or to meet you again!

take care,

Gilles (France)

Yosakoi Festival

Hello hello ...

What can I tell you about the past month here in Sapporo. First of all, I want to say it is great that I met many people in chit chat cafe and I hope you also did enjoy the time with me!

So last Friday I went with two Japanese friends to YOSAKOI festival. For me it was the first time there and it was very great and interesting. One of my friends had to tell a lot about the festival because she was dancing there herself ten years ago! I also did enjoy just the atmosphere in Odori park. We went there in the evening to see some stage performances. I am really looking forward to all other festivals in Sapporo in the next few month. The people are very friendly and kind so I can enjoy every moment. Sometimes I try to compare the atmosphere between Tokyo and Sapporo but I think it is nearly impossible because in Sapporo nearly everything feels different to me!

I am really excited about what will come in Summer! I think my favorite festival will be the BEER FESTIVAL ... haha ... maybe because I am German.

My blog is short today because I will leave home soon to go to chit chat cafe to see you :o)! Maybe you also went to YOSAKOI festival and can tell me about your experience.

See you!

The big melt

The snow has started to melt at last. I have been waiting for long to start using my bicycle again.
Last month was full of surprises. David and Ivona came back. I didn't meet Ivona, I just heard about her return.
Already a year has passed since the terrible earthquake. I remember it like it was yesterday.
I hope everybody is OK and I hope that you will come and visit me on Saturday from 2-4pm. Bring something good like chocolates...etc
Joke! Just come and have a nice chat.

Halloween and Harvest time

Happy Fall to everyone!
Fall is my favorite time of year. In addition to me having my birthday this last month, the leaves have started to turn, changing to red, yellow and brown. I went on a short trip to Shikoku, where they are not yet able to enjoy this spectacular transition. As winter draws nearer and nearer, and we prepare for shorter and colder days, it is a great time to thank our elders and celebrate the harvest and all the abundance the season offers us. Many fruits and vegetables are gathered and we sing the songs of thanksgiving. I recommend enjoying from fresh salmon, apples, kabocha or your favorite food and truly savor the bounty that Hokkaido provides. As usual, I haven't figured out what I will be for Halloween, and will probably decide at the last minute... Maybe I will gather plastic bags and make a suit out of them... Now that would be a great idea for a Manga super hero, no? PLASTIC BAG MAN! I hope that your season is filled with music and joyful celebration.

Living Abroad

Hello everybody,
I am back with some comments on living back here in Czech. I entitled this blog a little bit strange “Living Abroad”. Well, in spite of that Czech is my homeland I feel here sometimes like a complete stranger. Hopefully I haven’t become Japanese either, just I am looking on my country from a different point of view after 4 years living in Sapporo (which I miss so much!!). Moreover a lot of these comments are about Hideto, who is regardless his Japanese nationality has become “Czech-like” very soon:-)

Well, this time I would like just to give you big big virtual hug and encourage you to travel by yourself!! At least in East Europe people speak similar English as you, and they are good at gestures and other stuff;-) People here in general like Japanese and are very kind to them: half of Czech are crazy about samurais and other half are complete “otaku”, who know about manga and anime more than average Japanese teenager (about that let me write in another blog) and all of them love sushi, sashimi, eda-mame and some of them even miso soup!

And if you don’t have money for traveling? That’s no problem if you don’t mind to become a cook. Japanese restaurants became unbelievably popular, but of course there is big lack of Japanese cooks. So, one advice get good practice in cooking Japanese traditional meals, making sushi and cutting fish – it is more than useful if you wish to try work & travel in Europe!

yoroshiku onegaishimasu

Greetings to the staff and students at Chit Chat Cafe!

I have started working there about once a week and have enjoyed it so far. I like the
the way it is run, the pool table, books and other staff members I have met so far. I will hopefully be able to come to the upcoming party and meet some more of you. I am also looking forward to the upcoming beer festival and am saving my hard-earned (lol) CCC wages for beer.
