A sad week for technology

As many of you might know (i'm pretty sure ALL of you), last week Apple's CEO, Steve Jobs, passed away.

What came after was an unexpected, uncontrollable reaction from the internet community. In all the social networks, thousands and thousands of people started changing their profile picture with a Steve Job's one, and shared his quotes, sentences and videos.

For one day, the main news all over the world were about him.

But, as you might know, the world is divided in three kind of people : Apple Lovers, Apple Haters and people that really couldn't care less.

So, as expected, the reaction to this mass "virtual" grief for Steve Job's death made the "haters" share a lot of articles and informations about Apple's assembly factories in China where people are underpaid and where there have been a few cases of work suicides.

A few days later, another brilliant man sot his battle against illness : Dennis Ritchie, father of the UNIX programming language that is at the very base of every operation system as we know them, may them be MAC OSx or Windows or Linux.

And I think it's interesting to see how two very similar figures are instead very different.

Dennis Ritchie gave away for free most of his researches and ideas, since he thought that they were something that the world deserved and didn't want anyone to pay for them.

On the other side, Steve Jobs literally build an empire around his creations and ideas, and enforced a lifestyle image around all of his products to win over the computer's market.

So, long story short, this two men gave the computer community a lot. And sadly, they both left "the scene" last week.

For some reason, this made me think about what kind of person i'd like to be alike, if more of an humble brilliant man that gives away things for free, or a brilliant businessman that fears no competitors and wins his way into the market.

I guess time will help me understand.
