Soranuma-dake

It was back to the mountains for the last weekend of October. Rising uncharacteristically early in the morning to catch the first train to Sapporo, we started our journey to summit Soranuma-dake. Which sounds a little dramatic, but the hike is thoroughly enjoyable and very easygoing. This hike can easily be reached from Sapporo by public transportation and is a fantastic weekend get away.

Two hours into the trail we pass our accommodation for the night, a beautiful wooden hut. It’s huge! Sleeping at least 60 people. The best thing about it, there’s a large old wooden fire to warm the bones. Dropping our bags, we leave for a three-hour return trip to the summit of Soranuma-dake. The views from the top are outstanding and to top it off, the first snow started to fall. On returning to the hut, there was now a blanket of white spread over the surroundings. We spent a warm night inside and sadly had to return to the hustle and bustle of the city the next day.
